RAM is the short-term memory your laptop uses to keep everything you have open running at once: the browser tabs, the video call, the document you just clicked away from. Too little shows up the moment you switch back to a tab and it reloads from scratch, and on most laptops sold today you can't add more later, so the amount you buy is the amount you live with.

For most people in 2026, 16GB is the amount to get. 8GB still works for light use, and 32GB only earns its price for heavy creative work or running AI models on the laptop itself.

Is 8GB still enough?

For a few tabs, email, streaming and documents, yes. Windows 11 runs on as little as 4GB,1 and Apple still sells one Mac with 8GB, the MacBook Neo, pitched at exactly that kind of everyday use.2

The trouble starts when several things run at once. A video call with a browser full of tabs and a shared document open is an ordinary Tuesday for a lot of people, and that's where 8GB starts swapping things out to storage to make room. You feel it as a pause when you switch apps, or a fan that comes on for no obvious reason.

On a refurbished laptop, 8GB is a shorter runway again. A 2022 machine bought this year has already had its first few years, and the browser and apps it runs next year will ask for more memory than this year's do.

Why 16GB is the safe floor now

Apple and Microsoft both settled on 16GB a while ago. In October 2024 Apple made 16GB standard on every MacBook Air and kept the price at $999,3 so the Neo is now the only Mac that starts lower.2 Microsoft's Copilot+ PCs, the Windows laptops built for its on-device AI features, don't qualify with less than 16GB.4

That matters for a refurbished buyer in a practical way. Apps and updates are written for what most new laptops have, and most new laptops now have 16GB. A refurbished laptop with 16GB stays in step with that for years. One with 8GB is already behind the day it arrives.

Prices are part of this story too. Memory got far more expensive through 2026, which is why new laptops with 16GB cost more than they did and why a refurbished one built before the shortage is often the cheaper way to get it. The background is in Why phones and laptops are so expensive right now.

When is 32GB worth it?

If you cut video most weeks, keep a big photo library open in an editor, write code with several heavy tools running, or run AI models on the laptop itself instead of in a browser. Each of those fills memory and keeps it full for as long as you work.

For email, browsing, video calls, office work and photos from your phone, 32GB sits mostly unused. The money does more as a better battery or more storage.

Check the memory before you pay

On a listing, the RAM is the number written as "16GB RAM" or "16GB unified memory". Apple calls it unified memory because it's built into the same package as the chip.

Check it before you buy, because on most thin laptops there's no fixing it later. In a MacBook Air the memory is soldered into the chip package,5 and the ThinkPad T14s Gen 3 has its memory soldered to the board with no slots.6 Some business laptops still have slots: the Dell Latitude 5420 has two and takes up to 64GB.7 Unless the listing or the maker's spec sheet says the memory can be upgraded, assume the number on the listing is permanent. How that plays out across specific refurbished models is in The best refurbished laptop for everyday use in 2026.

What the "GB" on a listing doesn't tell you

The same listing usually carries two "GB" numbers, and they're different things. "16GB RAM" is memory. "256GB SSD" is storage, the space where your files and apps live. A laptop with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM has plenty of room for photos and still struggles with ten open tabs.

More RAM won't rescue a slow chip, either. Put 16GB in a laptop with a basic processor and you can keep more open, but a big spreadsheet still recalculates at the processor's pace and a video export still takes as long. The RAM sets how much you can have open, and the processor sets how quickly each thing gets done.

Common questions

Does more RAM make a laptop faster?
Only when you were running out. If you keep a few apps open and never see slowdowns, extra RAM changes nothing you'll notice. It helps when you switch between many apps, tabs and calls, because nothing has to be cleared out to make room.

Can 8GB run Apple Intelligence or Copilot+ features?
Apple Intelligence, yes, on any Mac with an M1 chip or later,8 including the 8GB MacBook Neo.2 Copilot+ features, no: they only run on Copilot+ PCs, and every Copilot+ PC has at least 16GB.4
